Somehow I’ve allowed updates here to dry up, so I’m disrupting the habit with the intention of kickstarting some more action on my part.
Secret World Live, the subject of my last post, entered the world of HD quite a while ago. I went further back in time immediately after that project and somehow forgot to post about it here. From restoring Peter Gabriel’s early 90’s tour I travelled to a previous incarnation of his, delving into myriad cans of film to put ‘Peter Gabriel Live in Athens 1987’ together. The 25th (and a bit) anniversary of So gave an impetus to look at the wonderful 35mm film that was directed by Michael Chapman leading the crew Martin Scorsese, as Producer, had put together to capture Peter Gabriel in concert.
The Athens project is a story in itself, perhaps to follow, but for the purposes of disrupting inactivity here, I’ll just say it was all absorbing. I went straight from detailed observation of the band on stage in Athens as I finished the film to observing the same people, back on stage 25 years later for ‘Back To Front’. David Rhodes, Tony Levin, David Sancious and Manu Katché playing with Peter to celebrate the anniversary of So Just as I finished looking at the output of the 87’ cameras I found myself in Canada looking for camea input from the same people, even the staging was the same (the moving lights that were central to the 87 show were dusted off and modernised for the new show).
There was still an edge of summer when I left for Canada. Damp as much of that season that was, it had nothing on the wintery conditions we’ve strayed into since my return. Luckily there has been plenty to keep my focused on a warm screen - more film to edit, exciting projects in the studio, all those shots from Canada to catalogue. Time rolls on, but the silence is broken.
